Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Composite trapezoidal rule with three equal subintervals

Explanation

The official answer is **D**: breakpoints −1,0,1,2 align with the three trapezoids, and f is linear on each. Integral = (6+3)/2+(3+2)/2+(2+3)/2=9.5. There is an additional source ambiguity: standard single-panel Simpson 1/3 gives (3/6)[6+4(2.5)+3]=9.5 too. Four-subinterval composite Simpson also gives (0.75/3)[6+3+4(3.75+2.25)+2(2.5)]=9.5. Thus A and C happen to be exact for this particular f under usual Simpson conventions, although the official MCQ key selects only D. That grading is retained; the extra coincidences are disclosed.
