Real Analysis · Sequences and Series of Functions · 2 marks · Multiple choice

On [0,1], f_n(x)=nx³e^(−nx). P:(f_n) is equicontinuous. Q:Σₙ₌₁∞f_n does not converge uniformly. Choose truth values.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) P true, Q false

Explanation

Put t=nx. Then f_n′=t²e⁻ᵗ(3−t)/n, uniformly bounded in n and x because a polynomial times e⁻ᵗ is bounded. Thus the family is uniformly Lipschitz and equicontinuous. For n≥3, the maximum is at x=3/n and equals 27e⁻³/n². The convergent sum of these bounds proves uniform convergence by the Weierstrass test. P true, Q false, **B**.
