An iid sample n>1 has f_β(x)=βe^(−x)(1−e^(−x))^(β−1),x>0,β>0. Test H₀:β=1 against H₁:β>1 at level α. Which holds?

  1. No UMP test exists.
  2. A UMP region is {Σx_i>a}.
  3. A UMP region is {Σln(1−e^(−x_i))>a}.
  4. A UMP region is {Σln(1−e^(−x_i))<a}.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) A UMP region is {Σln(1−e^(−x_i))>a}.

Explanation

For every β>1, the likelihood ratio against β=1 is βⁿexp[(β−1)Σln(1−e^(−x_i))]. It increases with the same statistic for every alternative, so a common upper-tail critical region maximizes power uniformly. Choose its cutoff to give null rejection probability α. **C**.
