Estimation · Point Estimation and Consistency · 2 marks · Multiple choice

An iid sample of size n has density exp[−(x−μ)] for x≥μ,zero otherwise,μ unknown. Let M̂ be the MLE of the population median. Which holds when μ=1?

  1. P(M̂≤2)=1−exp[−n(1−ln 2)]
  2. P(M̂≤1)=1−exp(−n ln 2)
  3. P(M̂≤3)=1−exp[−n(1−ln 2)]
  4. P(M̂≤4)=1−exp[−n(2ln 2−1)]

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) P(M̂≤2)=1−exp[−n(1−ln 2)]

Explanation

Likelihood increases with μ up to min X_i,so μ̂=min X_i. Median=μ+ln 2,thus M̂=min X_i+ln 2. When μ=1,the minimum minus 1 is Exp(rate n). At threshold 2,the CDF is 1−exp[−n(2−ln 2−1)],giving **A**.
