Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) 1/4; (D) 7/4

Explanation

For a real eigenpair Nx=λx,multiply by xᵀ and x to get 2λxᵀMx=3||x||². Since ||x||²≤xᵀMx≤3||x||²,it follows that 1/2≤λ≤3/2. Thus 1/4 and 7/4 are impossible. Taking N=(3/2)M⁻¹ shows 3/4 and 1/2 are attainable. **A,D**.
