GATE 2025 AG – Question 39

Irrigation and Drainage Engineering · Groundwater Hydrology · 2 marks · Multiple choice

Steady flow in a confined aquifer occurs when

  1. Recharge rate exceeds groundwater discharge.
  2. Recharge rate equals groundwater discharge.
  3. Recharge rate is less than groundwater discharge.
  4. Pumping rate exceeds safe yield.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Recharge rate equals groundwater discharge.

Explanation

At steady state, heads and stored water do not change with time. The aquifer water balance therefore requires total inflow/recharge to equal total discharge, including pumping where applicable. A sustained imbalance changes storage and produces transient heads. Thus **B**.
