GATE 2021 PH – Question 18

Nuclear and Particle Physics · Alpha decay, beta-decay, electromagnetic transitions in nuclei · 1 mark · Multiple choice

An electric-dipole (E1) transition connects an initial nuclear state $J_i^{\pi_i}=2^+$ to a final state $J_f^{\pi_f}$. All possible values of $J_f^{\pi_f}$ are

  1. $1^+,2^+$
  2. $1^+,2^+,3^+$
  3. $1^-,2^-$
  4. $1^-,2^-,3^-$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) $1^-,2^-,3^-$

Explanation

An electric multipole of order $L$ changes parity by $(-1)^L$. E1 therefore reverses parity. Angular-momentum coupling with $L=1$ permits $J_f=J_i-1,J_i,J_i+1$, subject to the usual exclusion of $0\to0$. Starting at $2^+$ gives $1^-,2^-,3^-$, exactly the set in D.
