GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 7
Hostel rooms are allotted in order of seniority. Existing occupants move if they obtain a room on their preference list; lower-ranked preferences are ignored during allocation. The data are: Amar, seniority 1, current P, preferences R/S/Q; Akbar, seniority 2, no room, preferences R/S; Anthony, seniority 3, current Q, preference P; Ajit, seniority 4, current S, preferences Q/P/R. Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (B) Q
Explanation
Allocate by priority. Amar takes R, vacating P. Akbar cannot take R, so takes S. Anthony takes the newly available P, vacating Q. Ajit then receives Q, his first preference. Thus Ajit stays in Q, option B. Keeping the original occupancy fixed would miss the vacancies created by senior applicants moving.
