GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 19

Geotechnical Engineering · Shear strength, Mohr circle, stress-strain characteristics, stress paths · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A soil sample is subjected to hydrostatic pressure $\sigma$. The Mohr circle for any point is

  1. A circle of radius $\sigma$ centred at the origin.
  2. A circle of radius $\sigma$ centred at distance $\sigma$ from the origin.
  3. A point at distance $\sigma$ from the origin.
  4. A circle of diameter $\sigma$ centred at the origin.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) A point at distance $\sigma$ from the origin.

Explanation

Hydrostatic loading gives equal normal principal stresses and zero shear: $\sigma_1=\sigma_3=\sigma$. The Mohr-circle centre is $(\sigma_1+\sigma_3)/2=\sigma$, and its radius is $(\sigma_1-\sigma_3)/2=0$. It therefore collapses to a point on the normal-stress axis at distance $\sigma$ from the origin, C.
