Correct answer: (D) Cannot be determined
Explanation
Write the subtraction as $5abcd-48e89=1111$. Then $5abcd=49200+100e$. A leading digit of 5 permits $e=8$ or 9. The valid completions are $50000-48889=1111$ and $50100-48989=1111$. The missing-digit sums are respectively 8 and 10, so the sum is not unique. Select D.
