The GATE Grind

GATE 2017 ME (ME1) – Question 35

Engineering Materials · Crystal structure of common metals · 1 mark · Multiple choice

  1. Yield stress.
  2. Proportional limit.
  3. Maximum stress.
  4. Fracture stress.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) Maximum stress.

Explanation

Engineering stress is load divided by original specimen area. Ultimate tensile strength is its largest value, corresponding to the maximum tensile load. It is therefore the maximum engineering stress, C. Yield stress occurs earlier, while engineering stress can fall after necking before fracture.
