GATE 2020 MA – Question 32

Functional Analysis · Bounded Linear Operators and Duality · 1 mark · Numerical answer

On real $L^2[0,10]$ with its usual norm, define $T(f)=\int_0^2f(x)dx-\int_3^{10}f(x)dx$. Find its operator norm.

Correct answer: 3 to 3

Explanation

This functional is inner product with $g=1_{[0,2]}-1_{[3,10]}$. Cauchy–Schwarz gives $|T(f)|\leq\|f\|_2\|g\|_2$, and equality is attained by a scalar multiple of g. Thus $\|T\|=\|g\|_2=\sqrt{2+7}=3$. The gap (2,3) contributes zero.
