GATE 2015 CS (CS2) – Question 15
Engineering Mathematics · Linear Algebra · 1 mark · Numerical answer
Find the larger eigenvalue of $\begin{pmatrix}4&5\\2&1\end{pmatrix}$.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 6
Explanation
The characteristic polynomial is (4−λ)(1−λ)−10=λ²−5λ−6=(λ−6)(λ+1). The eigenvalues are six and minus one, so the larger is six.
