GATE 2015 CS (CS3) – Question 62

Digital Logic · Boolean Algebra and Minimization · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Find the number of prime implicants of f(w,x,y,z)=Σ(0,2,4,5,6,10).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 3

Explanation

The largest all-one groups are {0,2,4,6}, giving w′z′; {4,5}, giving w′xy′; and {2,10}, giving x′yz′. The two-cell groups within the first four-cell group are not prime because they can expand. No other group expands without covering a zero. Thus there are three prime implicants.
