GATE 2023 BM – Question 30

Electrical Circuits · Transient Analysis · 1 mark · Numerical answer

In the shown circuit, switch S is open for t<0 and closes at t=0. Find the steady-state capacitor voltage in volts after closing, rounded to one decimal place. The source is 10 V, with 3 kΩ, 7 kΩ, 10 kΩ and 10 μF as shown.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 6.9 to 7.1

Explanation

At DC steady state the capacitor is an open circuit. Therefore the ten-kilohm branch carries no current and has no voltage drop. The capacitor voltage equals the divider output across seven kilohms: 10×7/(3+7)=7.0 V. The capacitance and series ten-kilohm resistance affect settling time, not the final voltage.
