GATE 2021 BM – Question 35

Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering · Tissue Engineering · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A polymer scaffold for cartilage tissue engineering has initial dry mass 20 mg. After seven days in lysozyme solution it is freeze-dried and has dry mass 18 mg. Find percentage degradation.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 10 to 10

Explanation

Degradation by dry mass loss is (initial−final)/initial×100. The lost mass is 20−18=2 mg, so the fraction lost is 2/20=.1. Percentage degradation is ten percent. Freeze-drying removes water uptake from the mass comparison.
