Correct answer: (C) R

Explanation

Pressure-gradient magnitude is pressure change divided by distance. All adjacent contours differ by the same 0.05 bar, so a smaller gap between them means a larger gradient.

The contours are most tightly packed near R. The higher absolute pressures around P and S do not by themselves indicate a faster spatial change. Therefore **R, C**, is the region selected by the criterion stated in the question.
