A single-phase 2 kVA, 100/200 V transformer is reconnected as an autotransformer for maximum kVA rating. Its new rating in kVA is ________.

Correct answer: 5.9 to 6.1

Explanation

The original winding current ratings are 2000/100=20 A for the 100 V winding and 2000/200=10 A for the 200 V winding.

Connect the windings series-aiding to obtain 300 V total, using the 100 V winding as the series section. The high-side load current can then be 20 A without exceeding either winding rating.

The maximum autotransformer rating is 300×20=6000 VA=**6 kVA**.
