GATE 2020 BT – Question 28
Engineering Mathematics · Calculus: Limits, continuity, differentiability, partial derivatives, maxima and minima · 1 mark · Numerical answer
Given $Z=X^2+Y^2$, find $\partial Z/\partial X$ at X = 1, Y = 0. Give an integer.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 2 to 2
Explanation
For a partial derivative with respect to X, hold Y fixed. Thus $\partial Z/\partial X=2X$. At X = 1 this is 2, independent of the specified Y value.
