Express the activity of m-molal CuSO₄ in terms of mean activity coefficient γ±.

  1. $m^2\gamma_\pm^2$
  2. $4m^3\gamma_\pm^3$
  3. $16m^4\gamma_\pm^4$
  4. $108m^5\gamma_\pm^5$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) $m^2\gamma_\pm^2$

Explanation

CuSO₄ dissociates into one Cu²⁺ and one SO₄²⁻ per formula unit. The product of ion activities is $(m\gamma_+)(m\gamma_-)=m^2\gamma_\pm^2$ under the molal-standard-state convention, A. Ionic charge magnitude does not change the one-to-one stoichiometric exponents.
