GATE 2019 AE – Question 30
Propulsion · Gas turbine combustors: types, combustion and stoichiometric fuel-to-air ratio · 1 mark · Numerical answer
How many moles of oxygen are required for complete combustion of one mole of ethanol (C₂H₅OH)?
Practise this question in The GATE Grind →
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 3 to 3
Explanation
Balance carbon and hydrogen first: C₂H₅OH + a O₂ → 2 CO₂ + 3 H₂O. Products contain seven oxygen atoms, while ethanol supplies one, leaving six from O₂. Therefore a=3 mol.
