GATE 2019 BT – Question 10

General Aptitude · Verbal Aptitude: Reading Comprehension and Narrative Sequencing · 2 marks · Multiple choice

“I read somewhere that in ancient times the prestige of a kingdom depended upon the number of taxes that it was able to levy on its people. It was very much like the prestige of a head-hunter in his own community.” According to this analogy, a head-hunter’s prestige depended on

  1. The kingdom’s prestige.
  2. The prestige of the heads.
  3. How many taxes he could levy.
  4. How many heads he could gather.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) How many heads he could gather.

Explanation

The analogy compares quantities accumulated: a kingdom’s many taxes correspond to a head-hunter’s many heads. It does not transfer the act of taxation to the head-hunter or refer to the prestige of individual heads. Thus D, the number of heads gathered.
