GATE 2025 CS (CS1) – Question 9

General Aptitude · Verbal Aptitude: Grammar and Vocabulary · 2 marks · Multiple choice

A square paper, shown in figure (I), is folded along the dotted lines as shown in the figures (II) and (III). Then a few cuts are made as shown in figure (IV). Which one of the following patterns will be obtained when the paper is unfolded?
Note: The figures shown are representative.
[Figures: (I) plain square. (II) square folded along a diagonal. (III) resulting triangle folded again. (IV) small triangle with three cuts: a triangle near the top edge, a square-like cut on the left and a small dash on the right.]

  1. Square cuts at top-left and bottom-right, L-shaped cuts at top-right and bottom-left, and triangle cuts at the midpoints of all four edges
  2. Diamond cuts at top-left and bottom-right, L-shaped cuts at top-right and bottom-left, and triangle cuts at the midpoints of all four edges
  3. Square cuts at top-left and bottom-right, L-shaped cuts at top-right and bottom-left, and edge triangles at left/right/top/bottom with the bottom one displaced
  4. Single square cut at the centre, L-shaped cuts at top-right and bottom-left, and triangle cuts at the edge midpoints

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Square cuts at top-left and bottom-right, L-shaped cuts at top-right and bottom-left, and triangle cuts at the midpoints of all four edges

Explanation

Unfolding mirrors each cut across both fold lines. This gives a symmetric pattern with an edge-midpoint triangle on each side, mirrored squares at two opposite corners and mirrored corner cuts at the other two. Only pattern (A) has this symmetry.
