GATE 2026 MN – Question 11

Engineering Mathematics · Linear Algebra · 1 mark · Multiple choice

For $P=\begin{pmatrix}2&1\\0&3\end{pmatrix}$ and identity I, which polynomial identity follows from Cayley–Hamilton?

  1. $P^2-5P+6I=0$
  2. $P^2-5P+5I=0$
  3. $P^2-6P+5I=0$
  4. $P^2-4P+3I=0$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) $P^2-5P+6I=0$

Explanation

The triangular matrix has eigenvalues2 and3, so its characteristic polynomial is (λ−2)(λ−3)=λ²−5λ+6. Cayley–Hamilton substitutes the matrix into its own characteristic polynomial, giving P²−5P+6I=0. Thus A.
