GATE 2024 AR — Architecture – Question 56

Building Services · Vertical transport systems- standards and uses · 1 mark · Numerical answer

An express lift runs from floor 2 to floor 80 with 4 m floor spacing. Maximum speed is 8 m/s; net acceleration and deceleration are 2 m/s² each. Starting and ending at rest, find travel time in seconds, to one decimal.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 42 to 44

Explanation

Travel height is(80−2)×4=312 m. Acceleration to 8 m/s takes 4 s and covers½×2×4²=16 m; deceleration takes the same. Remaining distance is 312−32=280 m, travelled at 8 m/s in 35 s. Total time 4+35+4=43.0 s. The supplied net acceleration already incorporates gravity.
