The GATE Grind

GATE 2025 CE (CE1) – Question 65

Highway Pavements · Bituminous paving mixes · 2 marks · Numerical answer

During determination of the bulk specific gravity of compacted bituminous specimen, the mass in air of the specimen is 1260 g and volume is 525 cm$^3$. The density of water is 1.0 g/cm$^3$. The theoretical maximum specific gravity of mix is 2.510.

The percentage air voids in the compacted specimen is ____________________ (*rounded off to 2 decimal places*).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 4.36 to 4.40

Explanation

The bulk specific gravity is $G_{mb} = \frac{1260/525}{1.0} = 2.400$. The air voids are $V_a = \frac{G_{mm} - G_{mb}}{G_{mm}} \times 100 = \frac{2.510 - 2.400}{2.510} \times 100 = 4.38\ \%$.
