GATE 2026 XH2 (English) – Question 14

Reasoning and Comprehension · Verbal reasoning and comprehension · 1 mark · Multiple select

Indian society is experiencing a boom in pet culture, where people are becoming responsible caretakers of pets rather than merely providing food and shelter. They no longer like to identify themselves as ‘pet-owners’ but rather as ‘pet-parents’. This means that there is an emotional transaction rather than a utilitarian one.

Which of the following weaken(s) the argument presented in the given passage?

  1. Some social media influencers are using their pets only for popularity.
  2. Food, medicines and clothes for pets are becoming easily available.
  3. Pet owners are expecting some provision for tax rebate.
  4. In today’s stressful times, pets provide emotional support.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) Some social media influencers are using their pets only for popularity.; (C) Pet owners are expecting some provision for tax rebate.

Explanation

The argument says the bond is emotional, not utilitarian. A statement weakens it if it shows pets being treated for use or gain. Using pets only to gain popularity (A) and expecting a tax rebate for keeping them (C) are both utilitarian motives. The easy availability of pet supplies (B) says nothing about motives, and pets giving emotional support (D) strengthens the argument.
