GATE 2024 AE – Question 15

Structures · Structural dynamics: free and forced vibration of SDOF systems and free vibration of 2-DOF systems · 1 mark · Multiple choice

For a single degree of freedom spring-mass-damper system subjected to harmonic forcing, the part of the motion (response) that decays due to damping is known as:

  1. transient response
  2. steady-state response
  3. harmonic response
  4. non-transient response

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) transient response

Explanation

The total response is the sum of the homogeneous solution, which dies out because of damping (the transient), and the particular solution at the forcing frequency, which stays (the steady state).
