GATE 2022 AE – Question 20

Structures · Strength of materials: stress and strain, stress-strain curves, trusses, bars, beams and shafts, determinate and indeterminate · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A beam with a symmetrical T-shaped cross-section, as shown in the figure, is subjected to pure bending. The maximum magnitude of the normal stress is realised:

source diagram and its labels are reproduced in the attached image.
  1. only at the top fibres of the cross-section
  2. only at the bottom fibres of the cross-section
  3. both at the top and bottom fibres of the cross-section
  4. only at the centroidal fibres of the cross-section

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) only at the bottom fibres of the cross-section

Explanation

The centroid lies nearer the wide upper flange. Bottom fibers are farther from the neutral axis and carry the larger magnitude of bending stress.
