GATE 2024 CY – Question 31

Inorganic Chemistry · Organometallics: 18-Electron rule; metal-alkyl, metal-carbonyl, metal-olefin and metal-carbene complexes and metallocenes. Fluxionality in organometallic complexes. Types of organometallic reactions. Homogeneous catalysis – Hydrogenation, hydroformylation, methanol to acetic acid process, olefin metathesis and Wacker oxidation. Heterogeneous catalysis – Fischer-Tropsch reaction, Ziegler-Natta polymerization. · 1 mark · Numerical answer

The number of metal-metal bond(s) in the complex $[(\eta^5\text{-Cp})\mathrm{Mo(CO)_2}]_2$ is $x$ and in $[(\eta^5\text{-Cp})_2\mathrm{Fe_2(CO)_3}]$ is $y$. The value of $x+y$ is ___. (Assume 18 electron rule is followed.) (Answer in integer)

Correct answer: 6

Explanation

Each Mo fragment has $6+5+4=15$ electrons and requires a triple bond. The Fe dimer has $16+10+6=32$ valence electrons, requiring three metal–metal bonds to reach 36; hence $x+y=6$.
