The reaction of $Ph_3PCl_2$ with $PhNH_2$ primarily produces ______.

  1. $Ph_3P=NPh$
  2. $PhP=NPh$
  3. $PhCl_2P=NPh$
  4. $Ph_2ClP=NPh$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) $Ph_3P=NPh$

Explanation

The amine substitutes at phosphorus and loss of two equivalents of HCl gives an iminophosphorane. The three phenyl substituents onphosphorus remain intact, so the product is **Ph3P=NPh, A**. The other options would require cleavage of P–phenyl bonds rather than substitution of the chlorides.
