Concerning the chemical potentials of components in a binary system at constant pressure, the correct statement(s) is/are

  1. For single-phase equilibrium at a given temperature, chemical potentials of the components change with alloy composition.
  2. For two-phase equilibrium at a given temperature, chemical potential of any component in both phases is same.
  3. For two-phase equilibrium at a given temperature, chemical potentials of the components change with alloy composition.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) For single-phase equilibrium at a given temperature, chemical potentials of the components change with alloy composition.; (B) For two-phase equilibrium at a given temperature, chemical potential of any component in both phases is same.

Explanation

In a single phase at fixed T,P, component chemical potentials generally vary with composition. At two-phase equilibrium, each component has equal chemical potential in both phases; changing overall composition along a fixed tie line changes amounts rather than these potentials. Temperature also affects chemical potential.

Thus **A,B**.
