Water flows over a finite plate. At distance $x=x_1$ from the leading edge, $V_x=0.5y-0.5y^3$. The boundary-layer thickness $\delta$ there is ______ m (two decimal places). $V_\infty$ is the free-stream velocity.

Correct answer: 0.53 to 0.59
Explanation
At the edge, velocity approaches its maximum free-stream value and the gradient vanishes. Differentiate Vx=0.5y−0.5y³: dVx/dy=0.5−1.5y²=0.
Hence δ=1/√3=**0.58 m**.
