GATE 2021 MT – Question 56
Two dislocation lines parallel to z lie in the x–z plane as shown. The glide force exerted by the edge dislocation on the screw dislocation is ______ N (nearest integer). The edge shear-stress component is $\tau_{xy}=\dfrac{Gb}{2\pi(1-\nu)}\dfrac{x(x^2-y^2)}{(x^2+y^2)^2}$. Given $G=28$ GPa, $\nu=0.3$, Burgers magnitude $b=0.29$ nm, and separation 0.5 nm.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 0 to 0
Explanation
For parallel lines, the edge and screw Burgers vectors are perpendicular. The edge stress field has no resolved shear component that drives glide of the screw on its plane. The Peach–Koehler glide interaction therefore vanishes: **0 N**.
