GATE 2018 ME (ME2) – Question 49

Engineering Mechanics · Kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies in plane motion · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A force of 100 N acts at the centre of a circular disc of mass 10 kg and radius 1 m resting on a floor as shown. It rolls without slipping. Find the centre’s linear acceleration (m/s²), to two decimal places.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 6.60 to 6.70

Explanation

For a solid disc $I=mR^2/2$. Force and torque balance with rolling constraint yield $a=F/(m+I/R^2)$. Thus $a=100/(10+5)=$ **6.67 m/s²**. Static friction supplies the angular acceleration.
