GATE 2016 CE (CE1) – Question 55

Irrigation · Gravity dams and spillways · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A concrete gravity dam section is shown in the figure. Assuming unit weight of water as 10 kN/m3 and unit weight of concrete as 24 kN/m3, the uplift force per unit length of the dam (expressed in kN/m) at PQ is _________

Correct answer: 10490 to 10510

Explanation

Using the conventional one-third residual-head assumption, drain head is5+(65−5)/3=25m. With γw=10kN/m³, pressures at heel, drain and toe are650,250 and50kPa. Integrating the two linear segments gives(650+250)·10/2+(250+50)·40/2=**10500kN per metre**. The drain-effectiveness convention is implicit in the keyed result.
