GATE 2016 ME (ME2) – Question 55

Thermodynamics · Entropy changes, closed and open systems · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A reversible cycle receives 40 kJ of heat from one heat source at a temperature of 127 °C and 37 kJ from another heat source at 97 °C. The heat rejected (in kJ) to the heat sink at 47 °C is ______.

Correct answer: 63 to 65

Explanation

For a reversible cycle, net entropy transfer is zero. Using rounded absolute temperatures400,370 and320K gives40/400+37/370−Qout/320=0. Thus Qout=320(0.1+0.1)=**64kJ**. Heat rejection magnitude is positive in the question; cycle work is77−64=13kJ.
