GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 50

Fluid Mechanics · Control-volume analysis of mass, momentum and energy · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The water jet exiting from a stationary tank through a circular opening of diameter 300 mm impinges on a rigid wall as shown in the figure. Neglect all minor losses and assume the water level in the tank to remain constant. The net horizontal force experienced by the wall is ___________ kN. Density of water is 1000 kg/m3. Acceleration due to gravity g = 10 m/s2.

Correct answer: 8.76 to 8.78

Explanation

Bernoulli from the free surface to the exit gives V²=2gH=2×10×6.2=124m²/s². The wall removes the incoming horizontal momentum, so F=ρAV²=1000×(π0.3²/4)×124=8765.04N. Thus **8.765kN**. Vertical spreading of the jet does not retain a horizontal outlet component.
