GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 54

Thermodynamics · Zeroth, first and second laws, work, heat and energy changes · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Steam at an initial enthalpy of 100 kJ/kg and inlet velocity of 100 m/s, enters an insulated horizontal nozzle. It leaves the nozzle at 200 m/s. The exit enthalpy (in kJ/kg) is __________

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 84 to 86

Explanation

Steady adiabatic flow without shaft work or elevation change gives h₁+V₁²/2000=h₂+V₂²/2000 when h is in kJ/kg. Hence h₂=100+(100²−200²)/2000=**85kJ/kg**. The increase in kinetic energy is supplied by a decrease in enthalpy.
