GATE 2014 EC (EC1) – Question 4
Runs scored in a series have these (average, standard deviation) statistics: K(31.2,5.21), L(46.0,6.35), M(54.4,6.22), N(17.9,5.90). Who is the most consistent batsman?

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (A) K
Explanation
The official answer measures consistency by the absolute spread of runs: smaller standard deviation means less variation around the batsman’s own mean. K has the lowest standard deviation,5.21, compared with6.35,6.22 and5.90. Thus **K,A**. A relative measure such as coefficient of variation would instead favour M; that is not the criterion used by the official key.
