A man rows at 8 km/h in still water. Rowing upstream takes three times as long as rowing the same distance downstream. Find stream speed (km/h).

Correct answer: 4 to 4

Explanation

For the same distance d, upstream time is d/(8−v) and downstream time is d/(8+v). The first is three times the second, so8+v=3(8−v). Hence4v=16 and **v=4km/h**. The resulting speeds4and12km/h give the required3:1time ratio.
