GATE 2022 ES – Question 22

Water and Wastewater Treatment and Management · Water Treatment · 1 mark · Multiple choice

River water has pH4 and suspended solids100 mg/L. With alum, which coagulation mechanism is expected?

  2. Sweep coagulation and polymer bridging
  3. Polymer bridging only
  4. Charge neutralization, surface adsorption, ionic-layer compression

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) Charge neutralization, surface adsorption, ionic-layer compression

Explanation

At acidic pH, positively charged aluminium species destabilize negatively charged particles mainly through adsorption and charge neutralization, aided by double-layer compression. Extensive aluminium-hydroxide sweep precipitation is favoured at a higher suitable pH. Thus **D** is the intended mechanism grouping.
