GATE 2024 EE – Question 34
The incremental cost curves of two generators (Gen A and Gen B) in a plant supplying a common load are shown in the figure. If the incremental cost of supplying the common load is Rs. 7400 per MWh, then the common load in MW is ______ (rounded off to the nearest integer).

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 35
Explanation
From the figure Gen A's incremental cost is $8000+20P_A$ Rs/MWh (it starts at 8000 at zero output) and Gen B's is $6000+40P_B$ (it reaches 10000 at 100 MW, where the lines cross). At 7400 Rs/MWh, Gen A would need a negative output (its minimum is already 8000), so it supplies 0. Gen B supplies $\dfrac{7400-6000}{40}=35$ MW, which is the common load.
