GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 27
A new airport has elevation 535 m above mean sea level, reference temperature 22.65°C and effective runway gradient 1%. The design aircraft needs 2000 m runway at standard conditions. Applying sequential ICAO corrections, the runway length after the temperature correction is

Correct answer: (C) 2500 m
Explanation
First correct elevation by 7% per 300 m: $L_e=2000[1+0.07(535/300)]=2249.67$ m. Standard temperature at this elevation is $15-0.0065(535)=11.5225^\circ$C. The excess is $22.65-11.5225=11.1275^\circ$C, giving $L_T=L_e[1+0.01(11.1275)]=2500.00$ m. The question stops at temperature correction; the gradient correction follows later. Select C.
