The GATE Grind

GATE 2026 CE (CE1) – Question 19

Transportation Infrastructure · Airport runway length, taxiway and exit taxiway design · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Corrections are applied to the basic length of the runway strip considering:

(i) The elevation H (in m) of the airport above Mean Sea Level (MSL)

(ii) Corrected air temperature T (in °C) with respect to the standard temperature at elevation H

(iii) The effective gradient G (in %) along the length of the runway

Respective correction applied to the basic length of the runway is:

  1. $0.07 \times \frac{H}{300}$; $0.01 \times T$; $0.10 \times G$
  2. $0.01 \times \frac{H}{300}$; $0.07 \times T$; $0.10 \times G$
  3. $0.07 \times \frac{H}{300}$; $0.10 \times T$; $0.01 \times G$
  4. $0.10 \times \frac{H}{300}$; $0.07 \times T$; $0.01 \times G$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) $0.07 \times \frac{H}{300}$; $0.01 \times T$; $0.10 \times G$

Explanation

The elevation correction is 7 percent of the basic length for each 300 m above sea level. The temperature correction is 1 percent for each degree. Only option A has these two, so it is the answer. (The gradient factor printed in this option, 0.10 per percent, differs from the usual 20 percent per 1 percent gradient.)
