Explanation
Taking initial elevation as zero, successive elevations are 0,3.6,1.5,4.5,2.1,−0.9 m. Maximum minus minimum is 4.5−(−0.9)=5.4 m. Effective gradient is $100(5.4)/1700=0.317647\%$, or **0.32%**, rather than the algebraic end-to-end gradient.
