GATE 2018 CE (CE1) – Question 65

Transportation Infrastructure · Airport runway length, taxiway and exit taxiway design · 2 marks · Numerical answer

An aircraft approaches a runway threshold at 200 km/h, decelerates at 1.697 m/s² and exits the runway after 18 s. It then decelerates at 1 m/s² to stop at its gate. Gate distance from the runway exit, to one decimal, is ______ m.

Correct answer: 311.0 to 319.0

Explanation

Exit speed is $200/3.6-1.697(18)=25.00956$ m/s. For subsequent deceleration 1 m/s², stopping distance is $v^2/(2a)=312.7389$ m, or 312.7 m.
