GATE 2017 CE (CE1) – Question 40

Irrigation · Canals, design of weirs on permeable foundation, cross drainage structures · 2 marks · Multiple choice

Match canal outlet types to hydraulic attributes. P non-modular; Q semi-modular; R modular. 1 discharge depends on both supply-canal and receiving-watercourse levels; 2 discharge is fixed and independent of both levels; 3 discharge depends only on supply-canal level.

  1. P–1, Q–2, R–3
  2. P–3, Q–1, R–2
  3. P–2, Q–3, R–1
  4. P–1, Q–3, R–2

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (D) P–1, Q–3, R–2

Explanation

A non-modular outlet is affected by both upstream and downstream levels, P–1. A semi-modular outlet, or flexible module, is independent of the receiving watercourse level but depends on the supply-canal level, Q–3. A modular outlet provides essentially fixed discharge over its working range, R–2. Thus D is the correct match.
