GATE 2020 IN – Question 19

Measurements · Electrical bridges: Wheatstone, Kelvin, Maxwell, Anderson, Schering and Wien bridges for R, L, C and frequency, Q-meter, megohm measurement · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A Q meter is best suited to measure the

  1. Quality factor of a capacitor.
  2. Distributed capacitance of a coil.
  3. Quality factor of a piezoelectric sensor.
  4. Turns ratio of a transformer.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Distributed capacitance of a coil.

Explanation

A Q meter uses a resonant circuit to characterize an inductive coil. Measurements of resonance at different frequencies and tuning capacitances allow its distributed or self-capacitance to be estimated. Among these choices that is its standard application, B. Transformer turns ratio and piezoelectric-sensor quality are not the intended measurements.
