Which method requires an initial interval bracketing a root to solve f(x) = 0 for a continuous nonlinear algebraic f?

  1. Newton–Raphson
  2. Regula falsi
  3. Secant
  4. Fixed-point iteration

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) Regula falsi

Explanation

Regula falsi maintains two endpoints a,b with opposite signs of f, ensuring a root between them by continuity. It uses the secant’s intersection with the axis and replaces one endpoint while preserving this bracket. Newton, ordinary secant and fixed-point iterations do not require a sign-changing initial bracket. Thus B.
